Could changing when or what you eat help manage bipolar symptoms? UC Berkeley is conducting the largest study of its kind to explore whether two eating approaches—the Mediterranean Diet and Eating by the Clock (eating during a regular 10-hour window each day)—might help with mood, sleep, and energy for people living with bipolar disorder.
We're inviting adults ages 18-65 who are currently receiving care for bipolar disorder to join us. Over 8 weeks, you'll follow one of these eating approaches while continuing your regular treatment. This study focuses on eating patterns and their relationship to mood and circadian rhythms—not weight loss or dietary restriction. You'll eat the same amount you normally would, with guidance on either eating windows or incorporating more whole foods like fruits, vegetables, and grains.
We'll check in with you regularly to learn about your experience—what feels helpful and what doesn't. Your insights will help us better understand how to support people living with bipolar disorder. Participants receive USD25/hour for completing assessments. The study is fully remote for those in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and India, or available in-person if you're near Berkeley.
